We understand that cleaning a property effectively requires education, appropriate supplies, and a systematic process. Viruses and bacteria can linger on surfaces for extended periods. Yet, cleaning and disinfecting can effectively eliminate these germs. Here is a comprehensive guide to help you understand the process better.
2-step cleaning process:
-
Begin by cleaning the surface with detergent and warm water using a clean cloth.
-
Then, proceed with a disinfectant. Alternatively, you can opt for detergent/disinfectant combo products. To ensure the effectiveness of the disinfectant solution, always prepare and apply it according to the manufacturer’s guidelines.
For details on recommended disinfectants against COVID-19, refer to the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
How often you do this depends on whether it is a:
-
Frequently touched surface (tables, hard-backed chairs, doorknobs, handrails, light switches, remotes, wardrobe and cabinet handles, desks, toilets, sinks, bedside
tables, kitchen and bathroom surfaces). These come with a higher risk of spreading viruses. Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces several times a day, despite any claims about how long it is effective.
-
Minimally touched surface (such as floors). Clean at least once a day. Spot clean ceilings, blinds and walls as required. They do not usually need to be disinfected as well.
-
Soft surfaces and upholstery need only be sanitised using a pressurized pump spray.
-
Linen and bedding should not be shaken as this can cause viral particles to enter the air. Dirty linen is best placed into a disposable laundry bag. If a linen service is used, then we recommend placing the disposable laundry bag in an additional large plastic garbage bag for transport to the laundry service. Ensure that all pillows have pillow protectors on them, and the mattress has a mattress protector. These items can be changed as often as needed or as seems reasonable.
Linen and bedding should ideally be professionally laundered, at the highest possible temperature and with the correct detergents for proper cleaning and sanitization. Be aware, fabrics that require a low temperature are not going to be sanitized according to the recommendations.
Personal Protective Equipment for COVID-19 cleans:
-
All personnel (including cleaners, maintenance workers, or any other individuals entering the premises) must wear masks and disposable gloves.
-
Change gloves between tasks within the property that involve potential exposure to bodily fluids. Use new gloves for each new property.
-
After removing gloves, thoroughly wash hands for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are unavailable and hands are not visibly soiled, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with a minimum of 60% alcohol can be used. However, if hands are visibly dirty, always wash with soap and water.
-
Once a mask (disposable or cloth) becomes moist or wet, it loses its effectiveness and should be disposed of or kept in a sealed bag for disposal later.
-
Splash goggles offer the best eye protection.
-
Consider cleaning timeframes and guest turnover. It takes an estimated 3 hours for larger COVID-19 particles to settle completely on the ground. If possible, request guests to turn on all fans before leaving the premises to enhance ventilation before the cleaning team arrives.
